While referring to the subject and reference referred to, it is to advise that the University Grants Commission has issued directions against providing and sale of Junk Food in Higher Educational Institutions. Banning junk food in colleges/institutions would set new measures for healthy food and to provide a better way of life for the students, and learn better and furthermore decrease the obesity levels in youthful students, therefore avoiding lifestyle sicknesses which have a direct connection with excessive weight.

The University Grants Commission requested for all the colleges to take necessary action on the accompanying points:

  1. To execute measures to sharpen the students on sick impacts of consuming junk food.
  2. Colleges can serve as important information sources on student’s wellbeing. Information on markers like body mass index (BMI)/level of body weight/waist hip ratio and so forth can help in creating awareness among students towards their health.
  3. Orientation programs for faculty and staff be conducted on medical problems.
  4. Wellness clusters should be created under the Students Welfare Department where counselling should be done regarding proper nutrition, proper exercise and healthy habits. These wellness bunches can likewise provide psychological support to the students to prevent and decrease the occurrence of obesity in young students. In this background, I am directed to request the Registrars of the Universities to issue necessary instructions to all affiliated Colleges under University jurisdiction and also direct the Principles of the Colleges to implement University Grants Commission instructions strictly in the colleges.
